The Foundation for Arable Research is running a Drought in Maize discussion at it Waikato Arable Research Site (WARS) at 4.00pm on Tuesday 12 March.
FAR’s Waikato Project Manager Mike Parker, says the event will cover practical aspects of managing this year’s crop as well as some ideas on the best techniques for establishing following crops. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.
Mike’s presentation will cover:
- The impact of the drought on yield and quality.
- Assessing dry matter levels and managing variable crops.
- Impacts on the following crop (including effects of drought on soil nutrients and herbicide residues).
Dr Paul Johnstone from Plant & Food Research will look at the effects of cultivation, cultivar and sowing dates on maize crops. His talk will cover:
- Results from the long term FAR cultivation trial, comparing soil moisture levels in cultivated and direct drill treatments.
- Compare the maize crop’s response to cultivation practice. How has the choice of hybrid and planting date affected the crop response to the dry conditions?
The WARS site is at 82 Oaklea Lane, Tamahere, just off Pickering Road, SH1.
