Calling East Coast maize growers...

171018 planting Whatatutu Gisborne

If you’re an East Coast maize grower interested in improving nitrogen use efficiency, profitability and environmental outcomes, read on! FAR is offering several opportunities for maize growers to learn, collaborate and help shape future nitrogen management recommendations.

Host a maize nitrogen use efficiency trial
FAR is seeking a maize grower in the Gisborne region to host a nitrogen optimisation trial. The project aims to update fertiliser nitrogen recommendations for maize, helping growers achieve better economic and environmental outcomes. The host grower will work alongside FAR to ensure the trial reflects practical, real-world maize management. The trial will evaluate a range of nitrogen rates using the Sustainable Vegetable Systems (SVS) nitrogen management tool and will include pre-season and post-harvest soil nitrogen testing.

Sustainable Vegetable Systems nitrogen management tool workshops
Maize and arable growers are invited to participate in a series of free workshops focused on the Sustainable Vegetable Systems (SVS) nitrogen management tool. These practical sessions will help you:

  • Understand how the tool works

  • Apply it to their own farming systems

  • Review results after harvest

  • Plan nitrogen strategies for future seasons

Participants will also receive complimentary soil testing to ensure they have accurate, up-to-date information to put into the calculator.

Gisborne Workshop Series

13 August 2026: Introduction to the SVS tool

October 2026: Applying SVS to your own crops

April 2027: Post-season review and learnings

July 2027: Planning for the next season

Click here to find out more about the SVS tool and scroll to the bottom of the information page to register for the workshop.

Join a maize nitrogen discussion group
FAR is also looking to establish a facilitated maize nitrogen discussion group on the East Coast. The group will provide growers with an opportunity to share experiences, discuss challenges and explore practical approaches to improving nitrogen use efficiency. A minimum of 6 to 12 growers is required for the group to proceed.

Interested?

Don't miss these opportunities to improve your nitrogen management, connect with other growers, and contribute to the future of maize production.

Seeking grower input

Want to have more of a say in how FAR operates in Canterbury? We’re looking for growers to join the Mid-Canterbury (MC) and Northern South Island (NSI) Arable Research Groups (ARGs). ARGs work with FAR to guide research and extension delivery within their region. Each of FAR’s seven ARGs includes up to 11 growers and up to five appointed members (usually from industry). They meet three or four times a year to share regional ideas and information and discuss research and extension projects.
