It is good to see new cultivars to the spring sown series of CPT out-yielding the incumbents. Four of the top performing spring feed barley cultivars yielded an average of 10 t/ha or above across the Canterbury trials in the 2013-14 season. Three of them are pre-commercial cultivars in their first year of CPT2 trials including: SYN411-285, CRBA140, and SYN410-235. Sanette, now in its second year of CPT2 trials, yielded an average of 10.1 t/ha. Average yields for the season were up on the four year mean in the southern North Island (7.7 t/ha compared with the four year mean of 7.6 t/ha), Canterbury (9.5 t/ha compared with 9.1 t/ha) and Southland (10.7 t/ha compared with 9.5 t/ha).
The new bread wheat cultivar KWM31 was the top performer in Canterbury spring sown wheat trials with an average yield of 11.3 t/ha followed by the gristing wheat Raffles with 10.9 t/ha. KWM31 is resistant to leaf rust, moderately resistant to Septoria leaf blotch, powdery mildew andFusariumbut moderately susceptible to stripe rust. Average yields were up on the four year mean in both the southern North Island (10.8 t/ha compared with 9.3 t/ha) and Canterbury (9.9 t/ha compared with 9.4 t/ha) spring wheat trials.
