FAR, in partnership with the Oat Industry Group (OIG), is seeking growers in South Otago and Southland interested in hosting a monitor paddock as part of a new three-year project assessing the regional resilience of emerging milling oat cultivars.
This is an opportunity to:
- Grow and evaluate milling oat cultivars on your own farm
- Access the latest knowledge and technical support from FAR researchers
- Work alongside advisors and agronomists
- Contribute to regional oat industry knowledge and cultivar development
- Improve long-term oat production and resilience
- Receive detailed feedback on crop performance and disease resilience from your paddock
What's involved:
- Hosting a paddock in South Otago or Southland (areas of interest are Lumsden, Chatton and Clinton)
- Sharing paddock management information, including crop and paddock history, tillage, sowing date and rate, seed treatments, fertiliser and pesticide applications, irrigation programme, yield and harvest data
- Recording key crop growth stages during the season
- Allowing soil sampling, disease assessments and yield component measurements during the growing season
- Participating in annual grower discussion groups and FAR Autumn Round Ups

- Willing to share paddock management information and allow contractor access for data collection
