FAR’s Cultivation Evaluation book,Spring Sown Wheat and Barley 2012/13has been released in time for 2013/14 decision making.
FAR Project Manager Rob Craigie says last season’s Cultivar Performance Trial (CPT) evaluations have shown that some of the newer entrants are performing well.
“For the spring feed barleys, Sanette, Garner and Sumit, yielded above average. Sanette also topped the autumn barley trials. The spring milling wheat CRWT151 yielded well for the third year and continues to show good quality characteristics. CRWT185 out yielded Conquest by 4% while maintaining good quality.
“Overall spring barley yields for 2011-12 were up on the 4 year mean in all regions from 0.2 t/ha in the Southland trials to 1 t/ha in the southern North Island.”
The CPT system has been running effectively for over thirty years. The success of the system has been paramount to the on-going genetic improvement we have seen in cereal cultivars in New Zealand. This system relies on companies collaborating and including their cultivars for the overall good of the industry. CPT is the only independent source of information you have available when making decisions on cultivars. In particular disease and sprouting nurseries give an objective measure of a cultivar’s sprouting and disease susceptibility. We encourage you to use the information in these booklets to make sound cultivar decisions.
FAR welcomes any queries or suggestions to further improve these booklets, or if you require any additional information that we have not included please contact us.
