Key points
- A foliar aphicide persistence trial was set up in a crop of winter wheat in May 2015 at Plant & Food Research, Lincoln.
- The trial tested aphicides from three modes of action: synthetic pyrethroids, carbamates and sulfoxamines.
- The insecticide Karate Zeon was shown to be the most persistent product of those tested, giving 25 days persistence at 40 ml/ha and 20 days at 20 ml/ha.
- Mavrik at a half rate, Pirimor at a full rate and Transform at half and a full rate were less persistent than Karate Zeon and performed very similarly ranging between about 6 to 8 days persistence.
- Previous work has shown that aphicide persistence reduces markedly in spring e.g. Karate Zeon 40 ml/ha persistence dropped to 4.3 days.
- Cold, wet and windy weather conditions increase aphid mortality.
