Key Points
Three wheat cultivars, Commando, Kohika and Torlesse, were evaluated across three spring sowing times to determine the effect on their performance
- In Canterbury, yields of all cultivars declined as sowing was delayed
- In the Manawatu, yields increased with sowing time for Kohika and Torlesse and peaked with the September sowing for Commando. Grain size was quite low in the Manawatu trials, indicating that grain fill was restricted, probably by Fusarium head blight
- Torlesse has provided greater yields in other autumn sown trials than those presented here
- Kohika was the highest yielding wheat, particularly if sown in August
