Key Points
- Partial bindweed control can be achieved using autumn (post-harvest) glyphosate or cultivation treatments followed by glyphosate in the spring and late sown maize
- The most effective herbicides for post-emergence bindweed control, Lightning (with IR maize), dicamba or Amaze + Activator, could then be used to provide good control
- The selection of hybrids with early vigour or Staygreen did not influence oxalis populations but did reduce the vigour of other weeds
- Both Roustabout and Amaze + Activator reduced the bulb number and biomass of oxalis and provided excellent control of other weeds. A programme of Roustabout preemergence followed by Amaze should give most effective control
- In this season, a number of herbicide programmes gave very effective control of both grass and broadleaf weeds. Some of these were single applications such as Roustabout plus atrazine, Amaze and Lightning (IR maize).
