Key Points
- Succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors (SDHIs) are a new family of fungicides with a new mode of action, being developed for use in cereals and a range of other crops.
- Like strobilurins these products need to be mixed with an un-related fungicide as an anti-resistance strategy, since the Fungicide Resistance Action Committee (FRAC) state that these products have a moderate – high risk of resistance developing. Triazole fungicides can be mixed to make them robust in terms of curative activity.
- The first of these products to be released in New Zealand for use in cereals is SegurisFlexi® (isopyrazam).
- In FAR trials in 2009 isopyrazam gave excellent control of leaf rust in both wheat and barley as well as recording the highest levels of green leaf retention in the barley.
- However results achieved with the product were not statistically superior to the Opus/Comet control in wheat or the Proline/Acanto control in spring barley.
