This Cereal Disease Management Cropping Strategy provides an overview of current disease management strategies for wheat and barley in New Zealand. It builds on previous editions of this Cropping Strategy by discussing FAR research conducted between 2018 and 2020 on the emergence of fungicide resistance in key cereal pathogens, cultivar disease resistance, and appropriate fungicide programmes in the context of resistance, cultivar and the economic returns they afford.
Key cereal disease management learnings from recent FAR fungicide x cultivar trials are the impact of selecting resistant cultivars, and the importance of tailoring spray programmes around cultivar resistance and seasonally driven disease risks.
