Managing runoff and critical source areas (CSAs) on arable farms requires site-specific solutions. A one-size-fits-all approach is ineffective because of the wide variation in soil types, cropping systems, and environmental conditions across farms.
This FAR Focus has been developed to help farmers undertake on-farm CSA risk assessments and identify practical mitigation actions to address risks and opportunities they identify on their farms.
It cites real-world examples of how a range of mitigation measures have been implemented across several different arable farms. The growers who have contributed have their own approach to managing CSAs, but each of them has been motivated to find solutions that make sense for their farm because they recognise the long-term benefits for productivity, resilience, and the environment. It contains a number of links to documents for further information about mitigation strategies.
FAR Focus 18 has been prepared by FAR, with support from the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Integrated Farm Planning Accelerator Fund.
