  • Biosecurity Tomato Red Spider Mite Tetranychus Evansi

Biosecurity: tomato red spider mite (Tetranychus evansi)

Dreamstime xxl 83063053 1

Two small populations of the tomato red spider mite (TRSM) were found in Auckland in May 2020.

TRSM is primarily a pest of horticultural crops, particularly those in the Solanaceae family (eg potatoes, tomatoes, capsicums etc). Weeds such as nightshade and shepherd’s purse are also favoured foods and host plants. More about TRSM on the MPI website.

Since May, Biosecurity New Zealand, Seed Growers Readiness and Response, and five other plant based industry groups have been working together to survey the pest’s spread. Key findings are that:

  • TRSM has now been detected at eight sites covering an area of 91.4km2 in Central Auckland.
  • TRSM has not been detected in crops.

The survey findings are likely to result in TRSM field operations being stood down, as the pest’s biology and confirmed geographic spread mean there is a low chance of successfully managing the incursion. Long term management options, including integrated pest management, are being considered.

What can you do to minimise the risk?

  • Control weeds on your property. Nightshade weeds were the most common host.
  • Maintain good on-farm biosecurity practices; ensuring that clothing, footwear and any equipment coming on site is clean from outside plant material and soil.
  • Be aware that you can call 0800 80 99 66 to report suspected pests or diseases.
