Key Points:
- Two species of lupins, sweet and white lupins, were tested in a series of trials as part of a project evaluating NZ grown grain legumes for animal feeds over the last 4 years.
- Fertilisers had no effect on grain yield.
- In 2004/05 there were no diseases in a trial at Greendale and no yield response to fungicide use. The following season at Marton, white lupins yielded best without any fungicide while sweet lupins yielded best with two sprays. In 2006/07 yields increased when fungicides were applied, in the absence of disease.
- Winter sown crops yielded more than spring sown at Kairanga in the 2006/07 season.
- Part 2 (Arable Update Pulses No.26) discusses more management trials from 2006/07.
