The grower consultation period for greenhouse gas emissions pricing options has been extended to the end of March.
Arable growers are urged to have their say during the He Waka Eke Noa emissions pricing option consultation process which got underway at the start of February. This period has been extended, and now closes at the end of March, not 1 March as originally stated. The extension is the result of a request by HWEN partners due to the expected interference of Covid-19 variant Omicron on their ability to complete consultations in the original time frame.
This extension will not have any immediate impact on FAR’s consultation with arable growers, which has already begun. It will however, provide extra time for growers to seek out clarification of the potential impacts of the proposed pricing systems, and to complete the Emissions Pricing Survey.
FAR’s first step in the consultation process has been to develop a series of information sheets (see below). These sheets outline each option in some detail, and provide summaries comparing the pros and cons of each option for agriculture in general, and for arable in particular. We have also modelled some examples of how much each system might cost your farm and provided background information on exactly what gases are included in on-farm emissions and how on-farm sequestration will be recognised.
FAR will also be running call-in sessions during February where staff will be on hand to answer any of your questions. These are being run from 8.00am – 9.00am on Friday 11, Tuesday 15, Thursday 17 and Tuesday 22 February. Check out the Events page of the FAR website to register and receive a call-in link.
It is important to note that the diversity of arable farm systems makes it impossible to provide generic estimates of the likely cost of the three greenhouse gas emissions pricing options for any one business. This is why it is so important for you to work out your farm’s emissions number.
Several tools are available to do this, and E-Check, which has been created by FAR, specifically for arable farms is one of the easiest to use. E-Check can be found in the Environment and Compliance section of the FAR website www.far.org.nz
The consultation process runs until the end of March 2022.
