The Foundation for Arable Research is holding a national conference for cropping farmers and associated industries, in Palmerston North in July.

FAR CEO Nick Pyke says the conference, Leading Research, Profitable Businesses, will feature three indoor sessions focussing on Farm Systems, Crop Agronomy and Maize, as well as a field trip and a conference dinner.

“The conference programme has been designed to offer something for all New Zealand growers, not just those who are based in the North Island. The Farm Systems session will look at cropping farms as a whole. Presentations in this session will cover issues around water and nutrients and recognise the close links between many cropping farms and the dairy industry. The Agronomy session will provide the latest research on how to grow high quality, high yielding crops, be they wheat, potatoes or barley. Disease and weed management will be highlighted here. The Maize session will also include links with the dairy industry and discuss future initiatives for this important crop.

“Leading Research, Profitable Businesses has been timed to align with Federated Farmers’ National Conference and will incorporate the Grain and Seed Industry Group of Federated Farmers portion of that event. Additionally, registration for the FAR Conference, includes attendance of the Plenary Session of the Federated Farmers Conference.”

Mr Pyke says the conference, its theme and location all tie in with the organisation’s recently launched business strategy which focuses on great people, strong partners, leading research, excellent communication and profitable businesses.
FAR's 2014 Conference, Leading Research, Profitable Businesses, will be held at the Palmerston North Travelodge on the 2nd and 3rd July 2014. Full Conference Programme.

H86 Effect of row spacing on seed yield in two white clover cultivars

Row spacing is an important management strategy in white clover (Trifolium repens) seed crops. Stolons grow outward from the crown of the plant into the space between rows. Nodes produced along the stolon bear either vegetative axillary growth (e.g. a branch) or a reproductive leaf-flower combination. The more nodes that are produced per stolon, and subsequently per unit area, the greater opportunity for flower production and thereby seed yield. In theory, wider row spacing should produce more flowers/m2 due to more space for stolon proliferation.
