FAR events in March

With Auckland in Level 3 and the rest of New Zealand in Level 2, FAR is carefully considering how to proceed with any events in the coming weeks. At this stage all North Island events have either been postponed (pending further lockdown decisions) or moved on-line. South Island events will go ahead, but we ask that anyone who has travelled to Auckland in recent days, or who feels unwell, does not attend.

Please feel free to call FAR if you have any further questions. Keep scanning and keep well!

QR codes compulsory for all farms - get one here

From 11.59 tonight, Wednesday 19 August, all businesses must display a NZ COVID Tracer QR code in a prominent place or near the main entrance for each business location. Farms are businesses, so please ensure that people coming onto your property (including contractors, reps etc) scan the QR code using the Ministry of Health's NZ COVID tracer App.You can get a QR code poster using the link below – It takes about 2 minutes to fill out the form, then they’ll email you the poster.

You’ll need:

  • a valid New Zealand driver licence
  • address details for each of your locations
  • email address
  • contact phone number
  • business description code – click here to find the one that best suits your farm

Put the poster inside a glass window, or, if it will be outside, protect it by laminating I or putting it inside a plastic sleeve.

FAR activities under newly announced COVID-19 levels

All FAR events planned between today and Friday 14 August will be held via video-link rather than face to face. If you were registered to attend an event this week, you will be contacted with details of how to login to the meeting via video.

All decisions around meetings planned for coming weeks will be made once further information around the Covid situation becomes available. This includes Arable Ys, Wednesday 19 August, which may be shifted to a video format. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

H85 Plantain seed crop responses to spring nitrogen in Canterbury

Plantain has become an increasingly important component of pasture seed mixes, driven in part by heightened environmental concerns regarding nitrate leaching from grazed pastoral systems. Nitrogen (N) fertiliser management is widely regarded as the principal agronomic lever for increasing plantain seed yield, especially in environments with low inherent soil fertility. This project aims to improve the agronomy of plantain seed production by identifying optimal biological and economic N application rates.

H84 Yield responses to fungicides in perennial ryegrass seed crops

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is the main ryegrass species grown for seed in New Zealand, supporting both pasture and turf markets. Canterbury leads production, with around 12,000 ha sown annually. This study pulls together results from ten Canterbury field trials to assess how different fungicide programmes and timings affect seed yield. It compares early versus late applications and offers practical advice to help growers improve rust control and maximise returns.

Seeking grower input

Want to have more of a say in how FAR operates in Canterbury? We’re looking for growers to join the Mid-Canterbury (MC) and Northern South Island (NSI) Arable Research Groups (ARGs). ARGs work with FAR to guide research and extension delivery within their region. Each of FAR’s seven ARGs includes up to 11 growers and up to five appointed members (usually from industry). They meet three or four times a year to share regional ideas and information and discuss research and extension projects.
