Growing arable

We support New Zealand's arable farmers by creating new knowledge, tools and technologies to support responsible and profitable farming.

The Foundation for Arable Research is an applied research organisation responsible to New Zealand arable growers.

FAR funds, or contributes funds to, research programmes, often in collaboration with government funded organisations or universities. Involvement in specific research programmes is driven by the interests of New Zealand growers. Levy funds are also used to secure additional Government funding through programmes such as the Sustainable Food + Fibre Futures Fund.

Our Research

Our Research

FAR's research and extension portfolio spans everything from field based crop agronomy trials to international collaborations and the crops of the future.

The portfolio is updated annually, but is sufficiently flexible to adapt to emerging research needs such as biosecurity incursions or regional issues. Results are published throughout the year via a range of hard copy and electronic means and Annual Research Reports are also prepared.

Cereals Update 230 Winter wheat cultivar mixtures under irrigated and dryland conditions in Mid Canterbury

Planting a crop consisting of multiple cereal cultivars (cultivar mixtures) enhances genetic diversity, which can improve both seasonal and long-term agronomic performance and slow or reduce disease spread. To assess the viability of this approach for feed wheat production under current commercial conditions in New Zealand, FAR conducted a series of field trials in Chertsey, Mid Canterbury, between 2021 and 2024.
