Media Releases • 29 November 2011

Crops annual expoFor the first time, Crops 2011 will provide you with an opportunity to view a number of agronomy and live machinery demonstrations from Platinum sponsors.

Wednesday 7 December 2011, FAR Arable Research Site, Chertsey 9.30am – 5.30pm followed by barbeque dinner

With more than 450 growers and industry personnel expected to be in attendance, this year’s Crops event is expected to be FAR’s biggest ever field day. It aims to provide farmers with an excellent opportunity to view current trials and hear up to date research findings from experts from New Zealand and overseas.

Also for the first time, there will be a focus on cereal and maize silage and grazing canola. These topics will be presented between 11.55am and 1.30pm to provide dairy farmers with the opportunity to attend.

Keynote  speaker  is  Robyn  Murray,  CEO  of  Go  Grains  Health  &  Nutrition  Limited  in  Australia,  a membership‐based organisation which links the Australian grains industry value chain from grain growers to food manufacturers (on the health benefits of grain‐based foods and legumes). Robyn will provide an overview of how Go Grains reviews the science and communicates the latest research findings about nutrition and health benefits to opinion leaders (health professionals, educators, food processors, food manufacturers and the media) so they can encourage consumers to include these foods in their diet.

Registration opens at 9.30am to allow ample opportunity for delegates to attend presentations and demonstrations  running  throughout  the  day;  further  details  can  be  viewed  on the events page

The day will also see the announcement of the FAR Researcher of the Year and presentations for other awards including FAR Studentships.

The evening will conclude with a barbeque dinner and drinks and a presentation by keynote speaker Robyn Murray.

Nick Pyke, FAR’s Chief Executive says the day will provide a range of in‐field presentations which cover a  number  of  topics  of  interest  to  growers.  Platinum  sponsors  will  also  have  the  opportunity  to showcase their products and services.

“As always, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for their continued support; their collaboration makes it possible for us to deliver a comprehensive programme with topics of importance for the future sustainability of New Zealand cropping industry.”

If you’re keen to see what the Platinum sponsors have on offer, here’s a snapshot of what’s in store:

Agronica
Agronica will demonstrate how Mavrik can give effective control of pests whilst leaving beneficial insects unaffected. Mavrik is significantly less toxic to many beneficial species than other commonly‐used insecticides.

Ballance Agri‐Nutrients
Ballance Agri‐Nutrients have set up a trial to demonstrate the relative performance of different liquid and granular urea fertiliser formulations. This demonstration will be presented and discussed at Crops 2011.

CASE IH
Earlier this year Case IH launched all‐new versions of their extremely popular Magnum tractors. The largest of the five new models, the 340 engine horsepower (389 peak horsepower) Magnum 340 will be demonstrated with a Kuhn Optimer 4003 stubble cultivator.

CB Norwood
The Rubin (Lemken) is a compact disc harrow capable of working in both primary and secondary cultivation and the TopDown (Vaderstad) is a four in one machine designed to reduce the number of passes required to cultivate a field, in turn saving time and money. Both will be demonstrated live at Crops 2011.

Landpower
Landpower will be demonstrating the Amazone 3C concept. The primary cultivation pass will be made with an Amazone 4001‐2 Super Centaur tine/disc combination machine which will be pulled by a 260 hp CLAAS 850 Axion tractor. Landpower will also exhibit the recently released Amazone Cirrus 6002 Active, trailing power harrow/drill combination,  designed  to tackle all ground conditions and soil types. Also operating will be the new Amazone Cayena 6001 6.0m direct drill, designed for all soil and seed types.

Power Farming
As  part  of  Power  Farming’s  live  demonstration,  two  of  Simba's  key  cultivation  machines  will  be presented.  The  Simba  Flatliner  500  subsoiler,  designed  for  maximum  sub‐surface  shatter  with minimum  surface  disturbance  in  stony  conditions  followed  by  the  Simba  SL  500  disc  tine  disc cultivation is a one‐pass non‐ inversion cultivation system designed to create a top‐quality level finish on all soil types.

Syngenta
On their agronomy site, Syngenta will be demonstrating their new SDHI fungicide “SEGURIS FLEXI” for rust control on ryegrass seed crops, and their new experimental PGR (SYN 007) in comparison with MODDUS.  In their marquee, a working demonstration of advanced nozzle technology will showcase the  Syngenta  Amistar  Air  Induction  nozzle,  which  reduces  spray  drift  by  75%  and  improves productivity and spray coverage at water rates of just 100 L/ha.
